Shades of Blue is a typical Karen Kingsbury novel. It grabs you from the first page to the last and when you’re done with the book you need to find the Kleenex to wipe your eyes, if you haven’t emptied the box before you get to the conclusion. In Shades of Blue we meet Brad, who is a successful advertising agent and engaged to be married to the woman of his dreams in 6 weeks. However, his new assignment for a kids clothing line brings to mind some things in his past that he thought he’d gotten over.

Brad feels like God is leading him back to his past to “finish that chapter before he can write a new one,” while his fiancé Laura must come to terms with the knowledge that Brad had a past that he has not told her about and he’s not the man she thought he was. Meanwhile, Emma has lost her faith in God and man because of choices in her past. She thinks that no matter how much she might want to pray or believe, she isn’t worthy because of what she had done. 

I bought this book the week of Thanksgiving, and as much as I wanted to read it I was holding off because I knew 1) I would not want to put it down and 2) I would be crying through it. Well, I started it when I had way too much to do ( I couldn’t stand it anymore) and stayed up way too late reading it and yes, I cried. Karen deals with the issue of abortion with compassion and sensitivity, reminding all of us of God’s compassion and love towards his people. Needless to say, I loved this book and have already recommended it to my friends. Although I have never had to deal with this subject or know anyone who has, it does a good job of showing how the “world” justifies it and can even persuade believers that it’s ok.
