The Knight and the Dove

February 21st, 2008 . by Lisa

The Knight and the Dove by Lori Wick is the fourth book in the Kensington Chronicles series. This book goes back to the beginning of Hawking’s Crest (Brandon ancestors-Hawk and the Jewel) and is the story of Megan and Bracken.

Megan is a girl of 17 who has been raised in an abbey (convent) and is commanded to marry Bracken by King Henry VIII. She is very compassionate and kind, but also stubborn. When her mother sends her to stay at Bracken’s keep before her scheduled arrival, she is mistaken for a servant and spends a week working in the creamery until Bracken returns.

I loved this book because both she and Bracken have so much to learn and I just had to laugh so many times. She has no idea what to expect in marriage, he has no idea how to deal with a wife other than the obvious, and they have no idea how to communicate…he blows up, she runs away.

While they are working on their communication skills, they also have to deal with Megan’s sister Marigold and their abusive mother. Once Marigold realizes that bracken has been elevated from an Earl to a Duke because of his obedience to King Henry VIII, she becomes determined to have the title and Bracken for herself.

Although Megan is a believer throughout the book, we see her struggle with her shortcomings and it reminded me that God doesn’t demand perfection, but will help us overcome those failings if we ask and are willing. Bracken isn’t a believer, but Megan is an example of a wife showing God’s love by her actions. Bracken does become a believer at the end of this book and they have many years together.
